End-Of-Life For Windows 10

End-Of-Life For Windows 10

Over 60% of users have been clinging to the operating system despite its successor being launched in 2021, but this year will see the end of Windows 10.

So, with this all sounding very apocalyptic, let’s take a look at what you can expect and answer some of the pressing questions on users' minds.

Can I still use Windows 10 after the deadline?

When Microsoft pull the plug on Windows 10 in October of this year, the operating system will still function. However, what will stop, is Microsoft’s support. This means the operating system will no longer receive bug fixes, new features or, most importantly, security updates.

That being said, you could opt to continue to receive security updates from Microsoft for a fee. This will buy you another year with Windows 10 before this service also ceases in October 2026.

What will happen if I continue to use Windows 10?

Without support and these security updates, any PC still running Windows 10 after October 2025 will become vulnerable and a likely target for cyber crime.

Unpatched vulnerabilities make it easy for malware to infiltrate your systems and can result in the theft or encryption of data.

Can I upgrade to Windows 11 for free?

Providing your devices meet the minimum operating system requirements for Windows 11, you can upgrade for free. However, we recommend you discuss upgrading on your current hardware with your IT provider so they can identify any potential performance issues.

You can look out for notices from Microsoft prompting you to upgrade or you can check through your Windows Settings to see if the upgrade is available for your device (if not yet, it will be soon).

How should I move my business from Windows 10 to Windows 11?

Firstly, you need to make sure your hardware is compatible with the Windows 11 requirements. Once that box is ticked, we recommend you identify a time to upgrade that will cause minimal disruption to your business.

The rollout should be phased. Start with a department that is least dependent on applications for business-critical processes. A team who are particularly tech-savvy will also help the rollout run smoothly.
