5 Reasons Why The Cyber Essentials Scheme Is Great For Your Business

IT Support - Hull

In 2014, the Department for Business Innovation and Skills, backed by the government, launched Cyber Essentials: a scheme designed to help businesses learn how to effectively protect themselves, and their customers’ data from the common threat of cyber attacks.

Of course, you know that cyber security for your business and its customers is no-one’s responsibility but your own, cyber crime protection is one of your day-to-day duties; so why the need for a government-backed scheme?

The great thing about the Cyber Essentials accreditation is it teaches best practice and gives you peace of mind that you’re doing everything you can in your security strategy. But it can also have a hugely positive effect on your business’ marketability; here’s how:

#1 We Know Our Stuff

When looking for a supplier or service provider, you want to work with a company you can trust, right? With the Cyber Essentials accreditation logo on your website and company literature, you show your customers or clients, existing and potential, that you take their data seriously and know how to protect it. And of course, if you’re in an industry that holds financial information for your clients, such as solicitors, accountants, etc. this point sits rightly at No.1.

#2 The Strongest Link

If you work within a supply chain, the Cyber Essentials accreditation could be a must for you; being CE certified reassures chain partners you are safe to do business with and less of a risk than other businesses that are not certified – for some supplier organisations it’s a case of if you’re not Cyber Essentials certified, you’re not coming in.

#3 The Edge

To show acknowledgement of the Cyber Essentials scheme and the dedication of attaining certification, shows investment in your business and customers, giving you a competitive edge; if you were choosing a service provider and one had invested in the security of their clients’ data and the others hadn’t, who would you choose?

#4 It’s A Matter Of Reputation

When you invest in your customers and clients, you invest in your business. A security breach can mark the end for even the biggest of organisations; customers often jump ship as their trust is tarnished, and the dent in reputation is often so deep that new customers won’t come anywhere near. Invest in your cyber security and you’re investing in your company’s longevity.

#5 Leave It To The Professionals

There’s no denying it, a certificate in any field makes all the difference, confirming you as certified, qualified and professional. If you were looking for a job, you wouldn’t even make it to interview without these qualities; why would clients trust you with their invaluable data if you were anything less?

The Cyber Essentials certification is your shiny badge that shows existing and potential clients you are trust-worthy, invested, and secure.

According to the government, if all SMEs implement Cyber Essentials best practice, around 80% of cyber attacks could be prevented.
